Places to Visit
We are well placed within the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds with its rolling hills and landscapes, encapsulated by the artist David Hockney in some of his paintings.
The city of York is about 17 miles away, with its Gothic Minster, city walls, river cruises and museums, including the National Railway Museum, Jorvik Viking Centre and Yorkshire Air Museum.
Going south, Hull is about 35 miles away and is home to The Deep, with its award winning aquariums. Beverley is a medieval market town about 22 miles away which is also famous for its Gothic Minster.
Along the rugged Yorkshire Coast are the resorts of Whitby (60 miles), Scarborough (40 miles), Filey (34 miles) and Bridlington (25 miles). The cliffs at Bempton (28 miles) provide the ideal place for bird watching being home to gannets, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars and puffins.
There are many historic houses and gardens in the surrounding area, the most famous being Castle Howard (20 miles). Others include Sledmere House (9 miles), Burton Agnes Hall (18 miles), Burnby Hall Gardens in Pocklington (6 miles), Sewerby Hall at Bridlington and the walled gardens at Scampston and Helmsley.
Heading north towards the North York Moors is Flamingoland (24 miles) and Dalby Forest with its Go Ape family adventure. The North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway runs from Pickering (25 miles) through some beautiful scenery to Goathland. At Eden Camp near Malton (16 miles) is a museum dedicated to World War II.
If you like a spot of racing there are race courses at York, Beverley, Ripon and Thirsk.
